Guide for a child passport renewal (PC8 form)
Eligibility:
Child passport renewal applications (PC8) can be mailed-in, provided the applicant is:
- aged up to 15 years old and
- has held a previous passport
If you can answer yes to the above, complete a PC8 passport application online.
Note: First passport and applicants aged 16 or 17 must lodge in person by appointment.
Instructions
1. Complete your renewal application form online
- The application must be lodged within six months of completion.
2. Print and sign your application form
- Print your application on plain white A4 paper. Make sure your form has printed in full and isn't cut off at the top or bottom of the page.
- Sign the form using black pen, within the signature box. Make sure there are no alterations or whiteout on the signature or the date.
- Children 10 years or older must provide a signature unless there is a medical reason or disability that prevents them from signing.
3. Photos
- Obtain two identical colour photos that meet Australian passport photo standards. The photos must be taken within six months of submitting the application.
- The back of one photo must be endorsed by the child’s guarantor, writing ‘This is a true photo of [the child’s full name]’ and signed in black pen.
- Do not attach the photos to the form as this may damage them.
- Photos must not be edited in any way, including any background removal or brightening. Photos with unnatural or removed/edited backgrounds will be rejected.
- Ask the photographer to email you the original unedited photo.
4. Prepare supporting documents
Option 1: If you mail the application to us
- Provide copies of both parents’ identity documents that show their name, photo, signature, and current address. E.g. passport & latest bank statement, utility bill, lease agreement, etc. Copies do not need to be notarised.
- Name changes: If the current names of either parent are different to how they appear on the child’s birth certificate, please include certified documents that explain the change of name.
Option 2: If you lodge in person by appointment
- Bring original identity documents for the lodging parent that shows their name, photo, signature, and current address. E.g. passport & latest bank statement, utility bill, lease agreement, etc.
- Bring your child's original birth certificate, proof of citizenship and previous passport.
- Name changes: If the current names of either parent are different to how they appear on the child’s birth certificate, please also bring original documents that explain the change of name.
5. Guarantor
- A guarantor must sign section 11 of the application form. Remember the guarantor must also endorse the back of a passport photo by writing ‘This is a true photo of [the child’s full name]’ and signing in black pen. 6. Consent
- Parental consent is required for a child passport. All individuals with parental responsibility must sign section 15 of the form in front of a witness. Ensure all both parts A & B filled in. The witness cannot be related to either parent (or the child) or reside at your home address.
7. Lodge your application
Option 1: Mail your application to us

- Mail the completed application form, passport photos and parent’s proof of identity documents to:

Option 2: Lodge in person by appointment
to lodge in person- You will need to make payment at time of appointment. Please read our information regarding fees.
8. We'll tell you when your passport is ready
- We will email you when your passport has arrived at the Embassy. You may come and collect it, or if you previously arranged for a courier to return it to you, they can collect it. Please allow a minimum of 6 weeks from payment for your application to be completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel on my current passport while I wait for my new passport to arrive?
Yes, your current passport will remain valid until you are issued with your replacement.
Do I send the current passport with the renewal application?
No.
How will I know if the Embassy has received the application?
Once your application has been received and confirmed to be fully completed, the Embassy will email instructions on how to complete payment.
How long will it take?
Passports are currently taking around six weeks from receipt of a fully completed application and payment to arrive at the Embassy. Incomplete applications will cause delays.
What if I need to travel urgently, but already mailed in the renewal application?

Will the Embassy post the new passport to me?
No, the Embassy will not mail the new passport to you. You will need to collect the new passport in person at the Embassy, or organise a third party or courier service to collect it on your behalf. Please note that if you organise a third party or courier to collect the passport, you will need to advise the Embassy in advance and provide the name and ID for the individual who is collecting the passport. Once the new passport is collected, the Embassy is no longer responsible for any loss or damage to the document.
My passport has expired. Can I still renew it by mail?
If you meet all of the eligibility criteria for a PC8 renewal by mail, then yes, you can renew the passport by mail even if it has expired.
