Guide for overseas passport applications (PC8 form)
Eligibility:
Book an appointment and use the Overseas Passport Application Form (PC8) if you are:
- applying for your first ever Australian adult or child passport OR
- aged 18 or over and applying for an adult passport for the first time OR
- replacing a passport reported lost or stolen OR
- applying for your first passport after resumption of citizenship OR
- applying to replace a limited validity passport, emergency passport, or other temporary travel document OR
- unable to answer the security questions for the online renewal form.
Instructions
1. Complete your application form online
- The application must be lodged within six months of completing the form.
2. Print and sign your application form
- Print your application on plain white A4 paper. Make sure your form has printed in full and isn't cut off at the top or bottom of the page. Refer to printing your application form for more information.
- Sign the form using black pen, within the signature box. Make sure there are no alterations or whiteout on the signature or the date field.
- Children 10 years or older must provide a signature unless there is a medical reason or disability that prevents them from signing.
3. Photos
- Obtain two identical colour photos that meet Australian passport photo standards. The photos must be taken within six months of submitting the application.
- For a child application, the back of one photo must be endorsed by the child’s guarantor, writing ‘This is a true photo of [the child’s full name]’ and signed in black pen.
- Please DO NOT attach the photos to the form as this may damage them.
- Photos must not be edited in any way, including any background removal or brightening. Photos with unnatural or removed/edited backgrounds will be rejected.
- Ask the photographer to email you the original unedited photo.
4. Gather supporting Documents
For an adult application on a PC8 Form, you will need:
- Your full birth certificate
- Evidence that you’re an Australian citizen
- Identity documents showing your photo, signature, and current residential address
- Documents that prove any change of name or change of gender.
For a child application on a PC8 Form, you will need:
- The child’s full birth certificate
- Lodging parent(s) Identity documents showing their photo, signature, and current residential address
- Evidence that the child is an Australian citizen
- Documents that prove any change of name
- Any court orders and additional passport forms we require to establish who has parental responsibility for the child.
- Child applications must have consent from all parent(s).
5. Guarantor
- A guarantor must sign section 11 of the application form. Remember the guarantor must also endorse the back of a passport photo by writing ‘This is a true photo of [the child’s full name]’ and signing in black pen. Refer to Guarantors for a Passport Application for information on guarantor requirements.
6. Consent in front of a witness (child applications only)
- Parental consent is required for a child passport. All individuals with parental responsibility must sign section 15 of the form in front of a witness. Ensure all both parts A & B filled in. The witness cannot be related to either parent or the child, or reside at the same address.
7. Lodge your application
to lodge in person- You will need to make payment at time of appointment. Please read our information regarding fees.
8. We'll tell you when your passport is ready
- We will email you when your passport has arrived at the Embassy for you to collect, or mail it to you if you have already arranged this with us. Please allow a minimum of 6 weeks from payment for your application to be completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I travel on my current passport while I wait for my new passport to arrive?
Yes, your current passport will remain valid until you are issued with your replacement.
How long will it take?
Passports are currently taking around six weeks from receipt of a fully completed application and payment to arrive at the Embassy. Incomplete applications will cause delays.
What if I have lost my passport and need to travel urgently?

Will the Embassy post my new passport to me?
No, the Embassy will not mail your new passport to you. You will need to collect the new passport in person at the Embassy, or organise a third party or courier service to collect it on your behalf. Please note that if you organise a third party or courier to collect your passport, you will need to advise the Embassy in advance and provide the name and ID for the individual who is collecting the passport. Once the new passport is collected, the Embassy is no longer responsible for any loss or damage to the document.
